A Wildlife Artist creating unique pieces of 3D art in the beautiful Forest of Dean

UNIQUE 3D WILDLIFE ART
I believe in challenging your status quo and preconceptions of animal behaviour and movement by asking you to consider them on a deeper, more profound level.
It demands a long close look from you at the unique use of just paper and nylon wire so you can understand the works narrative, how it captures the animals spirt and character and creates illusions of movement and behaviour. The intriguing shadows thrown by the papercuts intensify the experience further still.
HOW I CREATE MY ORIGINAL ANIMAL PAPERCUT ART
My deep connection with animals has lead to many an hour of behavioural observation, wonder and research.
I sketch several postures of an animal to decide which few resonate the most with me and highlights the animals behaviour and movement. I then cut many of the chosen animal postures (hundreds in for big pieces) by hand from paper making every one unique. I then add finer details such as legs, plumage colours, antennae and wings.
These 2D papercut animal silhouettes are fixed to layers of horizontally and vertically spaced nylon threads, forming an almost invisible 3d grid. I do one layer at a time, and there are usually seven.
I am fascinated with how the fixed animals can suggest a sense of movement and how the shadows they throw change with time and light. A fluid, intangible phenomena.
It's not coincidental that the subjects in my art work reflect my lifelong passion of nature and animals. I am a farmer's daughter, who progressed to a degree in Zoology and Animal Behaviour before working in animal health and welfare for many years. I settled in the Forest of Dean in 2003 and after having a family started my bespoke picture framing business Fellows Framing.
INSPIRED BY NATURE
My home is surrounded by the Forest. The garden attracts wildlife such as dippers, kingfishers, deer, swallows, dragonflies to name but a few. This beautiful environment gives me a constant connection with nature, I feel safe, I can be me. It makes no demands, it is my “therapist” that inspires me to create my illusional art work. Its my way of connecting with soul mates, talking non verbally to people who get it and therefore me and of creating profound real impressions.
You are welcome to visit my home to see my work in person. Visits are by appointment only please.
